The hemp and cannabinoid world is evolving so rapidly, it can be hard to keep up.  If you are still trying to figure out what CBD is all about and now are hearing all about “Delta 8”, or for those who already enjoy D8 products but could use a bit more info, let’s get into it a little more.

Here are the other topics we will discuss;

  • How is Delta 8 created?
  • What are the differences in D8, D9 and D10?
  • The differences between Delta 8, CBD, and traditional Marijuana.
  • Delta 8 Legal Stuff.
  • Delta 8 Product Options

So let’s dive into the world of Delta 8!

What is Delta 8 THC?

Delta-8 THC is one molecular bond different from its well known relative, Delta-9 THC (“regular THC”) .  For many people, the effect of these two cannabinoids is similar but with D8 being a bit weaker than D9.  However, the difference in potency can generally be offset by increasing the dosage of D8 relative to D9–many people cannot differentiate 10mg of D9 from 20mg of D8.

How is Delta 8 made?

Delta-8 THC is a cannabinoid which is a naturally occurring component of the hemp plant.  Because it is only found in trace amounts in nature, it is known as a “minor cannabinoid” and needs to be obtained from a hemp processing facility, where they work with large amounts of hemp biomass.

A primer on the various “Deltas” that are most commonly found in hemp products:

DELTA 8

As we’ve described, D8 products result in a similar experience as those made with D9.  It has soared in popularity since the passage of the 2018 Farm Bill.

DELTA 9

When people talk about “THC” without specifying which type, they are very likely referring to delta 9 THC, which is the predominant cannabinoid in most marijuana strains.

D10

Delta-10 THC is also a close cousin to Delta-9 THC with a very similar molecular structure.  However, unlike D8,  D10 has lesser potency to the point where most people will be able to distinguish it from both D9 and D8.  It does have a bit of a different vibe, in a pleasant way.  A great beginner cannabinoid.

Does D8 have anything to do with CBD?

Not really.  They both come from the hemp plant and both are cannabinoids but that’s about it.

Is Delta 8 THC legal?

It depends on where you are.  The Federal government paved the way for D8 legitimacy by passing the 2018 Farm Bill, but different states have different rules.  In North Carolina, where we are, it is legal, and that is the case in most states.  Please check the laws in your jurisdiction.

(Please note: we used to have a list of states where D8 and similar cannabinoids are not legal but the regulatory landscape is shifting quickly enough that we have removed it.)
